On Monday, October 29, 2012 Hurricane Sandy battered the east coast and forever changed the lives of the residents of Breezy Point. In the middle of the storm Over 100 homes were destroyed by a devastating fire and the remaining homes in the community were inundated with flood waters that rose upwards of 8 feet.
Since 1914, the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department has been a vital part of the community. Over the years, though the members and their duties have changed, the purpose and dedication has always remained. Many volunteer members of the RPFD stayed behind after a mandatory evacuation order was put in place to help assist in any way that was needed. Little did they know, they would be fighting for the community that was being wiped out right before their eyes.
Unfortunately, the RPFD was flooded with 5ft. of water and sadly lost all of their volunteer ambulances and fire trucks. These vehicles have helped save the lives and homes of many around the community. Let’s help them like they have helped us through the years. Through your generosity, the money raised will go directly to the Rockaway Point Fire Department and the residents of Breezy Point
